Thorn was an independent mini-state for more than eight centuries, where canonesses, led by a princess-abbess, held the reins of power. From the very beginning, it was clear that women played a major role, they were their own bosses and refused to be ruled by others.
Princess Cunegonda
During the walk, you’ll hear stories that illustrate female power. Stories about a letter sent to the Pope, in which the ladies firmly declared their right to choose their own clothing outside the Church’s rules and to eat meat whenever they wished. As you stroll through Thorn, you’ll also learn how the election of the new princess-abbess, Maria Cunegonda, unfolded with bribery and threats playing a part in the battle to become the most powerful woman in the Land of Thorn.
