About the area

The Weerterbos and Hugterheide walking area lies on the border between Limburg (NL) and North Brabant (NL). It is situated at the northernmost tip of the GrensPark KempenBroek. In July 2024, UNESCO recognised the KempenBroek as the first Man and Biosphere Reserve in Belgium, the second in the Netherlands and the first cross-border one in the Benelux!

Anyone visiting the Weerterbos, whether or not drawn by the red deer, will soon discover that it is a highly valuable nature reserve with old, damp deciduous forests, a few beautiful ponds and small areas of heathland.  On the western side, the Weerterbos is flanked by the dry forests of the Hugterheide. Here and there, you can still spot a patch of heathland. In autumn, the deer attract many enthusiasts hoping to catch a glimpse of the spectacular rutting season. The forest has its charms in every season, and anyone looking for the sounds of the yellowhammer, crested tit or nuthatch will not be bored for a second.
