Largest Inland Port
Maasbracht is best known for its harbour, serving both inland shipping and recreational boating. The inland port of Maasbracht is the largest in the Netherlands and is even considered one of the largest in Europe.
Coal Transshipment
Shipping has played a major role in Maasbracht’s history.
For many years, the port was the main transshipment point for Limburg coal. At the "coal tip," coal was loaded directly into ships. You can still see exactly where that happened in the harbour.
Triple Lock
The lock complex in Maasbracht connects the Juliana Canal with the River Meuse.
Here you’ll find the "Drielingsluis" (Triple Lock). With a drop of around 12 metres, it has the greatest water level difference of any lock in the Netherlands. From the lock, you have a stunning view over the port.
The VVV guide will tell you about the origins of this unique lock and explain how freight traffic on the water is managed here.
